A packaged drinking water label serves as a critical communication tool between the manufacturer and the consumer, providing essential information on safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Mandatory Label Requirements (India - IS 14543:2024) In India, packaged drinking water is strictly regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). As of 2026, the following information must be present:
  • ISI Mark: The product must carry the ISI mark along with the license number (CM/L).
  • Source of Water: The label must clearly state the source of water (e.g., borewell, municipal supply).
  • Treatment Method: Indication of treatment processes such as RO (Reverse Osmosis), UV, filtration, or ozonation.
  • Manufacturer Details: Full name and address of the manufacturer or bottler.
  • Dates: Both the "Date of Manufacture" and the "Expiry Date" or "Best Before" date must be displayed.
  • Batch Number: A unique identification number for the specific production run.
  • Net Content: The volume of water in the container (e.g., 500ml, 1L, 20L).
Label Materials and TypesCommon materials used for water bottle labels are chosen for their durability and moisture resistance:
  • BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene): The most common choice for wraparound labels due to its high clarity and water resistance.
  • Shrink Sleeves (PVC/PETG): These labels conform to the shape of the bottle when heat is applied, often used for 20-liter jars and neck seals.
  • Self-Adhesive Stickers: Typically used for personalized or event-specific water bottles, available in glossy or matte finishes.
Design ConsiderationsFor brands looking to stand out in the 2026 market, modern label designs often emphasize:
  • Transparency: Using clear label materials to showcase the purity of the water.
  • Eco-friendliness: Incorporating "Please Recycle" logos and using thin-gauge films (e.g., 30–35 microns) to reduce plastic waste.
  • Brand Identity: Distinctive color schemes (usually blues and whites) and logos that convey freshness and health.
